VirtueMart 2 is the latest stable version available. It is compatible with Joomla! 2.5 and Joomla! 1.5.x.
There are two versions of zips, which one should I use?
There is a smaller package with the suffix targz.zip (<2MB). This is packages should be the preferred one. It is usually easier to upload (some servers have a 2 MB limit). On the other hand, some servers have problems to extract a targz.
The normal zip package (>2MB) can be extracted on any server, but sometimes the 2 MB limit creates problems.
Attention: The package contains two files. VirtueMart 2 is only completly installed, when you install both, the core and the aio.

Requirements
VirtueMart 2 needs the same requirements as the joomla you are going to use with it. But we suggest to use
php 5.3+ and mysql5.5
php settings: 128 MB RAM (at least 64 MB for the pdf invoice)
