Now that the first Maintenance Version of VirtueMart (1.1.1) is out, it might be the right time to explain how to use the new Auto-Updater in VirtueMart 1.1. You might ask "why explain it? - it's so simple", but it's good to see how the whole process of updating through the Auto-Updater works.
At first you might want to access the Auto-Updater and check if a new version of VirtueMart has been released.
Select "Components" => "VirtueMart" => "Admin" => "Check for Updates" from the menu to open the page that allows you to check for updates.
After you've opened up the page, press the button "Check now". It will retrieve the latest version number from the virtuemart.net server.
If there's a new version, you will be given the opportunity to download it directly from our to your server. The package will be stored in your "cache" directory, where it's extracted.
The following page let's you review which files are going to be updated and what you need to do (when files or directories which need to be accessed are still unwritable).
If everything's ok, you can proceed to apply the patch.
Actually it's not a "patch" in terms of a "diff", but all files, which are newer are completely overwritten , reverting all the changes you have made!!! Make sure that you are not crashing your site before applying the update.
When you're done and everything went ok, you shoud see the "Done" page showing you the new version number.
