Now that we all have welcomed the new year, we from the VirtueMart Project can also thank all of *you* who have helped out or donated to VirtueMart. 2009 will be a great year for VirtueMart, that's for sure.
Joomla! 1.5.9 has been released today and you're advised to upgrade, because it fixes a security issue. That's why we have also updated our VirtueMart eCommerce Bundle to Joomla! 1.5.9 today. You can download the 9.5 MB package from our Developer Portal.
Also an important maintenance release - VirtueMart 1.1.3 - is currently being prepared for release (next week), so stay tuned.

Dutch-speaking people now have their first-ever VirtueMart Book! Today Gert Jan Fierlos mailed me that his book "MyStudy VirtueMart" has been published and is available from the Van Duren Media Web Site.

Meanwhile the work on the German VirtueMart Book is nearly finished. It's planned to publish the book at the end of January 2009. The book will be accompanied by the launch of a German VirtueMart web site.

Yesterday I was informed by our Server Hosting Company that one of our Servers must go offline for 5 hours from 11 p.m. (Thursday December, 4) - 4 a.m. (Friday December, 5). They are renewing and reorganizing the Central Power Connection for their Server Center.
This means that for at least 5 hours the Extensions Site, the Developer Portal and JAdCenter are not available. Most of our users worldwide will hopefully not even notice the short outage.

Now that Joomla! 1.5.8 has been released, I have updated our VirtueMart eCommerce Bundle to this new version. Not only this, but as announced earlier, this new Bundle includes new Sample Products and a new default Template (JoomlArt Larix, specialized for VirtueMart - including a custom VirtueMart Theme).
Another useful component will also be included for the the first time with the new Bundle: CustomQuickIcons. It replaces the default Control Panel with custom Links (one to your VirtueMart installation, of course).

VirtueMart is 2! Happy Anniversary!
The team is very happy to announce the second birthday of VirtueMart 2.
Within the two last years more than 1.5 million downloads have been made. Each release included massive improvements with constant and steady development. We are happy to know that the vm2 ecosystem is running well and there are so many extensions that adds value to VirtueMart, like payment and shipment systems, SEM, product builder and so much more.
VirtueMart 2.2 is on the way and we have reached already at least one milestone of the roadmap. We pay a lot attention on getting a more robust and compatible code. The changes are often not visible and just noticeable by developers working with it. Our goals for next year:
- Enhanced customfields (already developed, needs to be tested)
- enhanced cart (less code, more secure, easier to extend, more flexible, simpler OPCs)
- joomla 3 compatibility (added vmText, vmRequest, vmCheckToken, ...)
- jquery 1.8 (same as j3 uses)
- better encapsulated js
- fine grained rights management using the joomla ACL (Access Control List)
- JformFields for payment/shipment plugins
