VirtueMart - Open Source eCommerce Software

To get the synergetic benefits of "model-view-controller" (MVC) it is necessary that we port the Frontend of VirtueMart as well as its Backend. The structure for the Frontend is now nearly done. We hope to get a release candidate at the end of this month.

Maybe some people are wondering what has happened recently, seeing no real changes in the trackers and not a lot posts.

We have actually been very busy lately. After a long fight with the CodeBeamer development platform, and almost every new developer fighting with this system, we decided to switch to Redmine. We have tested it thoroughly  in the last few weeks. Redmine works very well and we got used to it so quickly that we have only used the Redmine system for the last weeks.

With the switch to Redmine we needed to establish a new teamstructure. We recognize that we have a big pool of people, who want to support the project - but they often just joined the team and didn't actually have the time to work (but will do so later), some lost their available free time (new job) and some had an accident or big change in their life. All okay, and we hope that each team member who volunteered will provide active help later, when they are able. But it is hard for us to find the people in the first place. It is much easier to have a team in which everyone is actually participating. On the other hand, people need a way to communicate with the team and to see if they can actually participate.

The idea now is that we open the internal VirtueMart forums even more for experienced VM users and third party developers who request to join. The internal forums are not strictly team-internal anymore. They are meant as a communication platform of VirtueMart experts who want to exchange development ideas and discuss possibilities.

Redmine will be a VirtueMart developer only platform (of course with testers, writers and so on). We will choose the people for the team out of the forum. This makes joining and participating to the project a lot easier. The badge in the forum just indicates the abilities of a new member and we can see if someone fits to the team.

Everyone who wants to participate in the internal forums should register here, write a private message with your reasons to "Milbo" or "Jenkinhill" (forum nick names) to gain access to the internal forums.

I'm glad you have posted an update. It's frustrating not knowing what the status is on this project. I'm hoping that the software will be more stable with the new release as I had to do a lot of whipping to get the last release into working shape. Keep up the good work.

Dj Willis: Tienda is going to take over eCommerce for Joomla

If the virtuemart team doesn't get their act together fast, Tienda by dioscouri is going to be the next shopping cart for Joomla that everyone goes to.

If you look at their project, you could learn a lot about how to communicate with your users and how to move your project forward.

They are a smaller team, but they are doing way more than virtuemart at a much quicker pace.

Tienda is going to crush virtuemart and virtuemart will be a complete waste of time if the team doesn't start learning from their example of how to develop an opensource project properly.

Look at the Tienda activity log on their Redmine developer portal and then compare it to the virtuemart one.
Virtuemart is dead and is a complete joke in terms of getting anything done and communicating about it with the community.

I wish it wasn't like this, because virtuemart could be so much better with their much bigger community and huge head start on what they have, but I am afraid that virtuemart will be passed up and people will start moving to Tienda if they don't get their act together now.

I have been using VM for a year or two and think it is pretty cool - it does what it needs to do but as everyone says it could be a whole lot better, and the lack of communication is very frustrating.

I think an example of an excellent cart is www.bigcommerce.com - they really are extremely proactive (not a joomla component though) - however the big issue is of course (including TiendaPro) that those fully-featured and supported products are not free.

So I guess that if you are motivated enough to change you could PAY for the privilege or support the team or just be patient.

FP: Virtuemart vs. Tienda or bigcommerce

The difference between VM and Tienda is, that VM can be used as a productive solution. Tienda is a nice component but they use InnoDB, what I don't like.
An excellent stand alone shopping cart solution is OpenCart and it is freeware.

OpenCart is great for starters - but Virtuemart is still way better.

Tienda looks great. Would be nice to see the same functionality in Virtuemart.

I'm actually getting tired of chasing updates and development ideas with my stores so I'm considering another platform that is - alas- not free.

Hope Virtuemart prevails with the mods like Tienda.
