Changed Roadmap to virtuemart 2 and latest updates from team for the this year. Print E-mail

While the beta phase, people very often mixed up the different versions, the name of the file for installation for vm1.1 is com_virtuemart_1.1.5.j15.zip. So people often saw just the 15 and got confused. As we started with vm1.5 it was planned only to port the backend to MVC, fast as possible. But then we decided also to port the frontend and changed a lot core behaviours (Templating, Calculation, Plugins). We were asked why we do not call it virtuemart 2. The core is completly rewritten, the tables differently organized and so on.

So from now on the branch virtuemart 1.5 is renamed to virtuemart 2, to reflect the progress better and to avoid confusion.
We will change all names and projects (redmine, forum) to the new name during the weekend.

In future will use the odd number system, so we could call vm1.5 also vm1.9 or so, but this would lead in the situation now to more confusion. The roadmap for the this year is to complete virtuemart 2 and to enhance it during the year with a wide ranging plugin structure, security, speed and more multi-x features (multistore, multivendor, multidomain). The generall philosophy is now to use the pluginsystem as best as possible and to provide a small stable core.

The next beta (now just vm2beta2 in future versioning system it would have been vm1.9.3) will contain joomla 1.6 compability. It will also contain a coupon system, the review system is on the way. We will provide more layouts and a new template. We are just adding a browse category view (at the moment there is only a browse products of a category view). It will contain more hooks for plugins. When beta2 is released, all 3thd party developers are invited to give ideas to the plugin system (lacking hooks) and to write payment plugins shipped with the payment plugin all in one installer.

Then we freeze implementing features and will take a special look on the security, fix uprising bugs and make a Release Candidate (vm2 RC, in future versioning system vm1.9.4) which should be already ready for operative environment. The deadline for the RC is end of march.
The next subversion vm2.2 maybe end of the year.

I love this. I think the discussion of future versioning is confusing, let's just call it 2.0 and be dome with it. You have a timetable for 2.0 RC and 2.2 but were silent on 2.0 stable. Hopefuly this would be available shortly after the release candidate.

SEOJ: Even more confusing?!? http://seoj.info
Can you just call it "2.0" or whatever the version is and state it is the next version that will be compatible with 1.5 and 1.6?

bongobongo: What kind of support for products in a multilingual environment = Joomla 1.6?
Hi

Good to see notes about support for Joomla 1.6 and when to expect releases!

It would be nice to see some comments related to VM and Joomla's support for multiple languages on frontend?

Will multilinguality be supported by VM in any way?
Will I be able to create one product in VM, and then give it different names (as well as other text fields which will be related to a specific language) according to the installed languages in the frontend?

If it's not planned support for the above, will I be able to install multiple versions of VM in Joomla 1.6, each installation linked to a different frontend-language. Not a very nice solution though, but better than having no support at all for selling on a multilingual frontend.

Would be nice to see some comments from the devteam on this issue.....

Bruce Rick: Future Plans http://www.brucerick.com
So what you are saying is to not plan on updating to Joomla 1.6 until at least March. I guess I can stay in Joomla 1.5.22 until then but man I really want to move up to 1.6.

Bruce Rick: Long Wait http://www.brucerick.com
So what you are saying is I shouldn't plan on upgrading to Joomla 1.6 until at least March correct? I suppose I can wait but that is a long time out.

I think you should make virtuemart 1.1.x compatible to Joomla 1.6 also.

Hi Guys
Can someone please confirm when VM will release their Joomla 1.6 compatible version. Above in paragraph 2 you guys said "After the weekend". The above article was published the 14th January.

Please give us some clarity to allow us to plan our projects better.

Thanks

Clear up : ...
I don't know, just to clear up some facts I read from the article and confusion I read from the comments:

1. A STABLE Version of VM 2 that will be compatible with Joomla 1.6 will be available END OF THIS YEAR.

Edit by Max Milbers: I dont know how do you get this information. End of the year is vm2.2 and vm2 with j1.6 will be march/april.

All what Store USERS should plan on is the STABLE RELEASE not the buggy BETA coming in March! The open Beta is an invitation for developers to test, debug, develop codes for the upcoming stable release not an invitation for users to run a LIVE shop with an unstable beta version that is simply UNFINISHED.

Edit by Max Milbers: The RC in march should be stable enough for a live shop as written in the news. Maybe you should first test the latest svn?

2. Who is planning to use Joomla 1.6 with VM should be aware that the planned BETA VERSION does not contain ALL ELEMENTARY FEATURES you NEED to run a STABLE full featured store! So to plan to move to Joomla 1.6 with VM2 BETA would be a very unprofessional attempt.

Edit by Max Milbers: Maybe you should stop lieing. Who told you that?

3. As you can read above, from the release of the BETA VERSION developers are invited to write plugins for payment systems, to apply hooks and other needed codes, so when someone uses this UNFINISHED BETA an upgrade to the STABLE version end of the year may become more complicative then waiting for the release of the stable version.

Edit by Max Milbers: Yes but this was already LAST year.

4. There will be NO SUPPORT of VM 1.1.x for Joomla 1.6 EVER. This was stated multiple times, as it would require similar rewriting of the code structures as it was done with the new VM 2 and logically makes no sense at all!

5. VM 2 will run with both Joomla Versions, so it logically replaces the VM 1.1.x branch after several years of it's existence.

Thanks for the update. Virtuemart remains perhaps the only full-featured 100% free solution for a serious online store. So it's nice to see it moving forward in an age where many commercial products are trying to attract customers by offering "lite" versions that lack a lot of features.

I tried out the new RC, but it is still bugy. I cant wait for the stable version. The situation is a little bit confusing, because Joomla has a complicated Roadmap
