VirtueMart - Open Source eCommerce Software

Some updates about the final release of virtuemart 2. Print E-mail
Written by Max Milbers

Some people were annoyed that we do not update about the situation. The question is do we communicate or do we develop? Our style to develop needs already really a lot of communication, because we use rapid prototyping and pair programming technics. There is also a lot of communication in the forum. People who follow the vm2 forum a bit are updated. They can see the errors, questions and our answers.
They should also consider that we already released a version which is more or less treated by the development team as a final. That means we take care that people can smoothly update. For us it is important that beta testers can use their work for their final store. We also train the update processes itself. As I already wrote before I suggest to install vm2, try, test and learn it. Start to create your store, learn the possibilities. Then you can decide if VM2 is ready for your purposes. The virtuemart 2 core is now and later released as is without warranty. If it is a final or not.

There are also some people who are annoyed, because they trusted the published ETA and have now angry clients. This people are very rude. Not helping but shouting that it is too slow is just ... (speechless). It is really crazy that the team should feel guilty and is accused for something it never promised by people who did nothing for the virtuemart project .

The version M was quite final, so we tested to develop different plugins and run into trouble. The payment and shipment plugins do not belong to the core, but are essential for a shop, so releasing a core without a minimum amount of working plugins is useless. We noticed that the system can be simplified, which improves and helps with the plgugin development. Since we are not final, we combined the abstract plugin handler for shipment and payment plugins. Within 3 days we optimised the pluginsystem and enhanced it. This was a big shift and very good that we waited with the final release.
The next big shift is that we got unhappy with the multilanguages solution for j1.7, or better said, there is none and it will take time until there is any and the solutions in seight are not performant. We got the idea how to write a fast performant multilanguage system. Since we need that for the virtuemart store, we decided to write it and it seems that we needed 4 days for it. The result is a multilanguage system, which is even faster than before.
Since we changed 2 big systems, the plugin system and the language system, we must do another release. We call it Release Candidate 3.

Thanks so much for the update!
Don't worry about the rude impatient people.
For each one of them Im sure there are hundreds of us who are patiently waiting yet eager to see the final final and appreciate the complexity of what you guys are doing and somehow coordinating between multiple developers.
Your work is appreciated.
Again, thanks for the public update.
And also thanks to all dev's who are so quick to answer questions in the forums.

Sérgio Amorim: Thanks for your hard work
Like everyone else that uses virtuemart I'm also "impatient" that this new version arrives, there is compatibility with j1.7, lots on new good features, better organization to write better themes, etc... but in fact there's no need to be rude.
In fact, we must be glad that there are lots of good people writing this software free of charge to the community.

It's better to deliver a quality product later and make a lot of people happy, that a buggy one sooner and disappoint everybody.

I thank you all for it.

Lobsterman: Victims of your own statements
I love Virtuemart and am a complete advocate for this great solution. I have come to the website daily looking for updates and the release of VM2. I have several clients who were holding off on creating their shops in order to use the new version. We were promised in September, and then in October, and now it is a week before Christmas shopping kicks in to high-gear.

While I completely understand development delays and do not like when people complain about not receiving "free software" quickly enough, I cannot help but think you guys have done this to yourself. You have over-promised and under-delivered constantly. These over-promises have put people in TERRIBLE POSITIONS, not only with their clients, but with their own shops.

I would have gladly accepted a statement saying "VM2 will not be ready until 2012", then to be told every 6 weeks that "VM2 is ready to take-off".

Again, I love Virtuemart and applaud your hard work, but you cannot get angry when you have constantly strung people along and now they are getting screamed at by clients and their own revenues are being diminished after waiting based on the information you have provided.

I have used VM for 5 yrs now, my living is based on it. I really think there should be more of a business model in it for the developers to provide more time as a job, even if it was for only 2 or 3 full time developers working and earning a living form VM.

You folks rock... Virtuemart has helped a lot of people make a living in its present form and we should be grateful for the developers who created it.

To those that have irate clients you should think of the old used car salesman saying that "the car ain't sold til the moneys in the bank" or don't promise something until your sure its available. I too wanted to use virtuemart for some new projects but used alternatives until vm2 is ready.

Once again a big thanks to the Virtuemart team and those that help in the forums.

HappyUser: Don't blame the develpers for your own mistakes
These website developers who earn their income with Virtuemart and frequently complain that VM2 isn't declared stable yet, just need to learn that they don't promise their customers a new - "Has-everything-you-can-dream-of-shopping cart", ready to go online next week - without testing in advance if both the current VM2 version and the developers knowledge is sufficient to fulfill the customer's requirements. It's 100 percent the website developers own fault, if he/she promises a feature to a customer, but never tested it before and is unable to code it him/herself. (Sometimes they need to learn to say "No" or at least "Not yet" to a customer :-)

With all of the new features and the constant evolution of this system it is the ideal eCommerce system for Joomla. And as Max points out using the development methodology (rapid prototyping) and the fact the there are developers all over the world working and communicating to develop this great software for FREE no one has the right to complain about anything. If there are people out that that made promises to develop a VM eCommerce system they should have used the old stable version and the older version of Joomla. It was a choice they made to use the new system before it was finished and unless your helping you have no right to complain.

xmurph: eye on performances! http://vm.thecatmart.com
Dear Dev Team, you're right there are many people that did nothing for VM project and are only pretending from VM, please ignore those people and take your eyes on people that want to help. I want help, and what I want to do is only to point your attention to performances of VM, so I've mounted a fresh VM installation of last release candidate on a my server with debug activated (http://vm.thecatmart.com) as can you see there are about 580 queries made by VM (click on "categorie" on the left), this is worryng me and I hope you're working on this so what I want to know is only if you're taking in mind this issue.
this is not an attack on VM or a criticism to your work, is only a attempt to help.
thak you for your answer

I've recently open a new ecommerce shop using virtuemart 1.1.9. waiting for the new release and the world has not fallen on my head. I'd prefer VM2, indeed, but I will certainly grateful for the help given to me by VM (my living depends on it).

It remains a great solution for bussiness developers until the new release appears. Your Dev:time-line is gone but the features of the final release will make You land on a preferent position, thats the big true.

I can't understand those that, after using the power of virtuemart to get benefits for itselfs, now are leaving for "better solutions on J 1.7.3"... (magento? joomshop?...). With all due respect to the other developers, VM2 appears to keep being the reference for the Joomla Ecommerce solutions (aks for the joomla developemnt team and talk about the J 2.0 and J 3.0).

The virtuemart development team can rest easy. At least, my time, money and my 2cents will support the efforts of a platform such as the VM.

Thank You, Mr. Milbers and thank You VM.

Guys, take your time, VM1 is working pretty well, there is no emerfency to release VM2.
Zen developping means time and time means stable releases. Thats what we need for a online shop.
What I understand is that webmasters are disapointed to have to install VM1 right now for their clients, while they know VM2 is about to be released.
Guys, webmasters : It's the game, lets think about running VM1 a few time more, and upgrade later with a safe release, bug free and stable.

Good to hear you are working on this and making a lot of progress. We have been using virtuemart for a number of years and highly customized it. Jürgen Buchberger: Please inform yourself correctly...
@Lireers: The developers and the community are heavily testing the new VM 2.0 - It runs under Joomla 1.5 and 1.7 - Joomla 1.6. is outdated and the Joomla developers recommend all to update to 1.7.

In other posts the Joomla developers notiy that all J1.7. compatibel components, modules, plugins will run under J! 1.8. and the planned J! 2.5.

If you like to increase the speed: Install VM 2.0, do some tests and post the bugs in the forum. This will help all.

BTW: It was never planned to release a VM for J1.6

Best regards
Jürgen

Adnan Kurtović: There is Donate button - use it !!! http://www.eusoftwaresolutions.com
If you are making for living by using FREE software, first you should check how to help. If you do not have time or knowledge, at least you can donate portion of fee you have charged to a client.

I would propose something like this: you build shopping site to a client based on Joomla and Virtuemart and charge client $1000. After you are payed, use Donate button at the bottom of this site and contibute with $10, then go to shop.joomla.org and buy yourself a cool looking Joomla T-shirt or some other gadget.

This will help up development of both projects and you will not lose client because you promised new version of shop before September smilies/wink.gif

gilespierce: Take the time and make it great! http://www.pierce.uk.com
People seem to forget that Virtuemart 1.x is still a great piece of kit, that still works great, and has a huge number of people that know every bug, quirk and trick it has. We're in the middle of doing another e-commerce site, and you know what? We're using Virtuemart 1.x because it still works. Customers place orders, money changes hands and orders are received. The sites we churn out on 1.x look great, use the latest tech when it comes to code (jQuery, HTML5, CSS3) and just work the way we expect them to.

Virtuemart is free. And yes, I'm one of the people who don't contribute anything myself (although I doubt much HTML CSS and jQuery would be of a huge amount of help) and their are plenty of paid solutions out there that are bang up to date, and have a dev team who you can rightfully moan to if something doesn't work - but for me? Virtuemart is free, open and and the best solution I found for e-commerce.

I think people need to start getting a) realistic and b) responsible with this. To use such new software on a live site for a client who's primary business could be powered by your work, you need to really know the software. You need to play with the RC's and build test sites, because if you didn't know about a bug, or the dev team didn't know about a bug, it's your own clients who pay the cost. Developing e-commerce sites for clients is a big responsibility - you have control of their business. So before you run off to Joomla 1.8 and Virtuemart 2.0 as soon as it's released, stop and think about it. We're expecting to start using Virtuemart 2.x towards the end of 2012. By then we'll know it just as well as we do 1.x, the plugins and payment gateways will be available, and then, and only then will it be ready to use.

Release of version 2.0 isn't when it's ready for your clients. It's just where the Dev teams job in releasing Virtuemart is just about done - and your job begins.

Hi,

I just want to thank all the team, and all the hard work and effort you all put in for your projects.

I can only speak for this provider, but I understand what it takes and how much work is involved, and appreciate everything the team does!

"...speechless" this is not surprising from some ignorant individuals, but I hope this is not represented by the greater community, and I suspect it is not!

But, if you can after your hard, full days work can publish how many lines of code that now make up both VM 1.1.9 and VM2. With that information when my client/customers, contacts ask I need it "Now", I can reply, well if you would like me to custom build it for you then it will require me to write and debug x,xxx, xxx lines of code, test and integrate, and provide full service and documentation, project manage, program, graphic design...etc. just to many details to many to go on. Oh, and not to forget a Huge project budget!

Or, just wait, and be patient, if in your appreciation offer a donation, comments, feedback.

Thanks for all you do!
Mark G.

Gaetan69: Communicate or die! http://Http://www.mercurieux.nl
Dear Max and the VM team, in your update you state:
The question is do we communicate or do we develop?

I think this is not THE question.

But first: I am greatfull for the developers efforts in development and progress of such a wonderfull product as VM. And as its open source, basicly it is free.

However as i have learnt when i once worked in a beach restaurant: People dont mind waiting as long as they believe or know that they are not waiting in vain. It would be a great idea to invest some of your time in communicating even if that would add up to the time your fans have to wait. Because now i dont even know if you guys actually still exist.... I dont mind waiting, please inform me about what i am waiting for...

In this day and age it is: communicate or die!
Not because i want you to, more because people have a short term loyalty and are considering alternatives. So guys please support your own survival and post an update once a week, maybe not with new news but just a sign of life so that we hungry people know that the love we feel for you is for real and that our waiting will be rewarded with a supercharched turbolizede commerce solutionshizzle!

Hola,

Tombias Schmidt: Thank you Virtuemart
Gaetan69 I agree totally with your comments.

I am not one of the rude people as Virtuemart say but a developer with real clients whom after the 2-3 weeks away release comment sadly lost faith in Virtuemart.

You choice to develop or communicate is wrong. Do both. Look after your community and your community will look after you. It takes 2 minutes to post an update here.

I have supported Virtuemart for years purchasing components, modules and plugins. I have now sadly moved away to Magento.

Thank you for your time and effort over the years and good luck with the new release.

Goodbye.

Max Milbers: I dont understand the moaning about no communication
The news are not a place for commmunication. Here we provde the news for people who are not intersted to communicate, for this we have the forum. The news for tracking the project, when you want to communicate, write your concerns into the forum and there we can talk.

johnoAU1974: Does (or will) VM2 include a fix to display Aust GST correctly?
First of all, thank you Virtuemart team for making such a wonderful product available for all to use.
Secondly, like most or all Australian Joomla users who create eCommerce sites, we are holding our breath waiting for a solution/module that will display our GST correctly. I have a hack working on VM 1.5.25 which is not compatible with more recent Joomla releases but surely you wonderful people would be thinking about incorporating some fix into the main VM component? Can any Aussies confirm if VM2 displays our GST correctly? Thanks
