Past
The VirtueMart project was originally found as "phpShop for Mambo Open Source" in January 2004. In September 2005, the script was renamed to "VirtueMart". In the 2 years of development the software has been improved and became usable for most users running smaller stores. That's a reason for all contributors to be proud of this shopping cart script.
Present
Now as the user community still grows and grows, people ask for more features (some of which are really complicated ones), good support and for a roadmap.
Last year I tried to found a small developer team and after a short time I had gathered 4 people from germany to help me develop VirtueMart. But it showed that many people only use/develop VirtueMart for a short time period (for a client) and after that have to care for other things and don't have time for VirtueMart anymore. But I also know that there are volunteers out there who are helping people out here each day for a long time (official and inofficial forum moderators) and I thank them.
I think the reason why I couldn't found a strong development team yet is because I'm not the born "leader" or organizer. A team should consist of people who are just there and give their heart and soul to the project. I don't want to give tasks to a developer, but I want the developer to take a look at the feature-request / ToDo list and decide on his own what he wants to do.
